Orthodontics
and Maxilofacial Orthopedics is that branch and specialty of dentistry
concerned with the supervision, guidance and correction of the growing
or mature dentofacial structures and the diagnosis, prevention and
treatment of any abnormalities associated with these structures.
Today's
options are not like the train tracks of yesteryear. Many new materials
decrease the wear time for many patients and there are even clear
or colored brackets like hot pink or neon green, invisible trays and
invisible types which are placed behind the teeth.
BRACKETS

Once upon a time, only preteens or teenagers were getting brackets.
Not so anymore. Now, adults can also have the option of using braces
to correct crooked teeth. Younger children are also getting brackets-
even as young as 7 or 8 years old. Orthodontists have learned that
they can expand the soft palate of a young child before it fuses.
This early intervention can negate the need for the pulling of adult
teeth down the road. Advancements have also been made in how braces
look. Now people can choose metal, clear, multicolored, or invisible
brackets. Children and teenagers now enjoy changing the look of their
mouth each time they go to the orthodontist for adjustments. Much
has been done to ease the awkwardness of having brackets.
